Homemade drinks – Hot or cold but not as sugary

Yes, yes, still water is healthier, from the tap when you are lucky or bottled water. And yes, yes, breastmilk is better for babies and Moms (except in serious cases). (WHO recommendations on infant feeding: https://www.who.int/nutrition/topics/infantfeeding_recommendation/en)

But when you want to indulge yourself… and especially for cold drinks, industrial products add tons of sugar. On the labels at my place, I can read 120g of sugar per litre for organic syrup. I can read the same amount of sugar for products that are not going to be diluted: still in my country, organic fruit juice peaks at nearly 100g/l and Coca-Cola at 128g/l. These are what I call directly sending formal invitations to diabetes!

So, yes, you can indulge yourself from time to time with a sweet drink if you don’t overdo it. The recommended daily dose of sugar is 25 g/day or six teaspoons.

I suggest three healthy recipes that can be drunk hot or cold. It’s to get you started! Afterwards, you will invent your own recipes.

1) Infusion of rosehip (rich in vitamin C): Put a bag of rosehip infusion in the teapot. Add simmering and not boiling water. Enjoy without sugar or sweeten with raspberry or blackcurrent syrup.

2) Green tea with mint (good for digestion): Use simmering, non-boiling water, which you pour over a bag of green tea and fresh mint previously placed in the teapot. Remove the tea after 2-3 minutes, leave the mint for at least 10 minutes. Drink as it is or mix with a spoonful of organic wholemeal sugar or organic lemon syrup or organic sureau flowers syrup.

3) Green tea with lime or yellow lemon (good for the liver): Cut the lemon into pieces. Place the black tea of your choice in the teapot (Earl Grey or Russian Earl Grey for me). Use simmering, non-boiling water, which you pour over a tea bag. Remove tea after 2-3 minutes; leave the lemon. Blend with a spoonful of organic wholemeal brown sugar (optional).

Now there are three of them to take care of the children
Not to mention school and TV…

A broken household
Confused children
Confidence lowered
And disputes
That relieve stress
On the nearest person
It’s too late!

Broken household

But the stress came from work
And who’s going to argue with that?

We can’t live without work
Both have to go through it
To be able to barely pay for what they need

If only they knew
They could have discussed
Getting out of the system.

Change their organization
Another job
Another informal job
Create a cooperative
Calling for a vote by popular initiative
Change the country
Live in another country
Another… what?

Super Tomato

A long time ago, my flatmate used to bring these jars of tomato sauce that were so delicious. They came from her Sicilian grand-mother and my flatmate used to say: “I don’t understand why people buy it; it is so easy to make. You just cook the tomatoes in a big pan. You put the hot sauce in a jar and turn it upside down, that’s it.” It took me time to follow the instructions but when I finally did, I was convinced.

You can use any variety of tomatoes but the higher the quality of the ingredients, the better the dish will be for your taste and health. So choose your products well. (from your personal garden or the market,  preferably organic).

You can add whatever you like: rosemary, thyme, pepper, stalk celery, half a carrot, etc.

You can use it on pasta or rice or even use it for another recipe. Enjoy!

Healthy Nutella This has a different taste from the famous Nutella jar but it tastes healthy and most people do like it (except for the Italians…). As far as I am concerned, I prefer this one; I can’t stand the overload of sugar and fat which hides all the other ingredients’ tastes. If you are a sugar tooth, you can use sugar at first and reduce it little by little. The higher the quality of the ingredients, the better the dish will be for your taste and health. So choose your products well. (from your personal garden or the market,  preferably organic). 2 tbs coconut oil (deodorised or not). 4 tbs cashew puree or peanut purée (or 8 tbs if you do not have the hazelnut puree). 4 tbs hazelnut puree (well-mixed). 1 dark chocolate bar – melted. Ton/Ta Jean/Jeans/Gin Tagine/Tajine??? What’s this language!

The better the quality of the products, the better the recipe to taste and for health. It is better to choose the right products: garden, A.M.A.P., market, craftsman, etc. preferably organic.

Choose ingredients that go together: read tagine recipes and follow your inspiration.

Cut the onions and fry them gently in olive oil in the electric tagine. Add Salt.

Brown the pieces of meat (or not if you make a vegetarian dish).

Add a little butter and the spices of your choice (ginger, garlic, saffron, parsley, coriander, etc.). Mix well.

Add the vegetables, with or without potatoes, cut into pieces and, possibly, dried fruits (grapes, almonds, prunes, apricots, etc.)

Pour  ½ glass of water approximately. Cover.

Cook for at least an hour and as long as possible over very low heat.

If you wish, add cpreserved lemons and olives for the last 15 minutes.

As for chard, here is an healthy and easy recipe : Cut the blett in small pieces. (Optional, I add a celery stalk, cut into small pieces as well). Melt them in hot olive oil in a pan or a cast iron pot. Add soy sauce and cook for 10 minutes over medium heat. Add a little cream and cook for another 5 minutes.

And broccoli?? Remove all broccoli leaves, cut the stem and separate the heads. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes in boiling salted water. Drain them. Melt the butter in a pan or cast iron pot, then add the broccoli pieces and cook for about 5 minutes while stirring. It’s ready!
