A referendum is a way of voting for ideas and action. There’s no need for politicians who can betray their electorate and who are elected for the short term. What people vote for when they vote for individuals does not represent what they think (strategic voting, voting for the least worst candidate, voting on promises, etc.). It would be better to vote directly for ideas.

Referendums can be used for short-, medium- and long-term measures.

There are measures that can only be taken in conjunction with others. Referendums should allow citizens to vote on groups of measures to prevent them from being forced to vote against their ideas because of half-measures.

It can change systems.

To give more responsibility to the citizens thanks to referendums, a good education is needed and citizens should know how to protect themselves against fake news. This requires an independent and trustworthy press.

Referendums bring people together around their common ideas, whereas candidates divide them.

Referendums allow the people’s representatives to be brought back into line when they do not follow the will of the citizens.

If the people’s representatives are chosen at random, this allows citizens to be better represented.
